April 7 - 12 - Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at Academy of Music, Philadelphia - This has been the jewel of the Philadelphia culture scene since it opened in 1857. The simple brick Federalist exterior opens into an ornate interior-art deco lamps, velvet cushions, and possibly the largest chandelier on the East Coast. The Philadelphia Orchestra, the Pennsylvania Ballet, the opera and the occasional pop show have performed at the academy. April 8 - 19 - At Home at the Zoo at Philadelphia Theatre Company, Philadelphia - With a mix of recent New York favorites and new works on their way to New York, the Philadelphia Company is a good bet for a night out. It is usually nominated for several awards each year, and frequently walks away with some of them. There are receptions on opening nights, plus special events such as "Meet the Artists" and beer or wine tastings during the run of a show. Its home, the Plays and Players Theatre, is probably the best-looking, intimate theatre in town. It's an ornate, early 20th-century pile, well worth a visit on architectural merits alone. June 1 - Flag Festival at Betsy Ross House, Philadelphia - American schoolchildren have all heard the story: The first American flag was made by Betsy Ross. It's not true, but it's a great story. This house is still worth a visit as an example of Colonial living conditions. Betsy Ross mainly used this colonial abode to rent rooms to travelers and wayfarers. According to the Philadelphia Historic Society, more people visit the Ross house than any other historical attraction.
